Frequently asked questions

1. What is the difference between ISU CDT and other dance teams at ISU?
ISU CDT is considered the official sport club team at the university. Because of this, the team is NOT responsible for performing at all university athletic events for sidelines (football, basketball, etc.). Our team does football, basketball, and volleyball media timeouts, local performances, and is the only university dance team that competes at NDA Nationals in Daytona Beach, FL.

2. Is there a fee for being part of the team?
Yes. Because we are a student-ran organization, we are responsible for our own payments. There are monthly fees that go into a team account. This money is used for everything and anything involved in participating on the team (apparel, travel, lodging, etc.). We also do team fundraising in an effort to help with this alongside our sponsors!

3. When are practices?
Practices are currently two-three times a week for 2-3 hours. These nights and practice days vary from season to season. We strongly encourage dancers not to take night classes so that we can have different evenings to choose from for practices. There will also be additional practices added closer to Nationals. There are also two mandatory team workouts per week that are scheduled based on each persons' class schedule.

4. When are tryouts?
Tryouts typically take place late April or early May. All announcements regarding tryouts are posted on our team Facebook page and our team Instagram account.

5. What happens at tryouts?
There are two rounds to our audition process: the video tryout round and the in person tryout round. The video tryout takes place first. Upon signing up for team tryouts, individuals will receive a list of team requirements, skills, and dance genres that will need to be compiled into a video and submitted to the coaches. Once all videos have been evaluated, a select group will be asked to attend the second round of tryouts, which occur in person. At in-person tryouts, you learn a short  routine that you perform with a partner or small groups. You are also responsible to demonstrate any leaps, center leaps, calypsos, spinning disks, leg holds, triples, quads, and turns in second variations that are asked for during the audition. You will also be given the opportunity to perform any tumbling skills or additional skills you may wish to show. Following this round, individuals will be informed immediately following the tryout who is being asked to participate in the upcoming season.

6. What do I wear to tryouts?
Red, black, and/or white fitted athletic/dance clothing are required for both rounds in the tryout process. Please refrain from baggy pants, hoodies, and gym shoes. We want to see you hit technique!

7. Is there a tryout fee?
Yes, there is a $25 try-out fee. This fee covers necessary amenities for an audition. If using a check, please make it payable to ISU Competitive Dance Team.
